Hornøya - A holiday experience far from the ordinary
Are you tired of everyday life and in need of a holiday? Would you like to spend your holiday differently than the standard trip to the beach or big city? If so, we recommend a trip to Hornøya in the north eastern part of Norway. Bring your friends, family and loved ones on an unforgettable experience in breathtaking scenery. At Hornøya you can really experience our planet at its finest, with the forces of nature beautifully present.
Hornøya – be present and at one with nature
Hornøya is the most eastern part of Norway, and you can visit it by boat departing from Vardø. The island lies in the Barents Sea, just a short one-kilometer boat ride from Vardø Port. In a mere 10 minutes you'll reach this stunning island teeming with birdlife. While visiting Hornøya, you can see an immense number of exotic birds, catch delicious fish, go for beautiful hikes, among other things. Hornøya is a place where you are away from all that is “city-like” and are left alone with nature. In many ways, Hornøya reminds us of what nature really is like when left untreated.
Hornøya: A Birdwatcher’s Paradise
Upon arrival at Hornøya’s dock, the towering bird cliffs come into view, home to an impressive array of arctic bird colonies. Even as you approach, the sky above is alive with seabirds diving and soaring, hunting for food in the ocean—a preview of the rich wildlife awaiting you. This island hosts species such as the thick-billed murre, a unique bird that only nests in arctic climates. You’ll also have the chance to see puffins, auks, common murres, grebes, great and crested cormorants, teals, and even storm petrels. Moving towards the island’s flatter grounds, you’ll find nesting grounds for grey gulls, seagulls, and black-backed gulls, while the waters of Hornøya and the Varangerfjord serve as crucial winter habitats for arctic sea ducks.
Unique Flora and Protected Habitat
Unlike the stark arctic landscape to the north on Varanger Peninsula, Hornøya has lush vegetation, enriched by natural fertilization from the island’s bird population. As a protected nature reserve, certain areas on Hornøya are restricted to preserve its delicate ecosystem, but visitors can still explore much of the island by following designated paths that bring you close to nearly all the bird species in their natural habitat.
Prepare for Your Visit to Hornøya
Due to Hornøya’s remote location, local weather can change quickly and unpredictably. Be sure to pack warm beverages, snacks, and, of course, your camera to capture the island’s rare beauty. Stick to the paths and respect the birds to ensure a safe, enjoyable visit.
Please do not hesitate to contact us if there is anything you are wondering about or would like more information on. We are here to help you and your loved ones have a magical experience. Enjoy your journey to this remarkable island, where the wild beauty of Norway’s arctic coastline awaits!
